The Embassy of Ghana in Brasília, which is concurrently accredited to the Republic of Suriname, is pleased to announce the arrival of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, in Paramaribo as the Special Guest of Honour for the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations of Suriname.
Ghana and Suriname established diplomatic relations in 1975, at the dawn of Suriname’s independence. Since then, relations between the two nations have grown steadily, driven by a shared history, cultural affinity, and a mutual commitment to strengthening South–South cooperation. The African-descendant community in Suriname, which constitutes approximately 30% of the population, proudly trace their ancestry to the Asante people of Ghana. This deep historical connection continues to serve as a strong foundation for cultural and diplomatic engagement.
His Majesty the Asantehene will be received by the full House of the Parliament of Suriname and by the President of the Republic of Suriname. His engagements will include inspecting a special guard of honour, witnessing a grand parade featuring detachments of the country’s various security services, attending a spectacular fireworks display, and holding interactions with other Heads of State and global dignitaries. Notable attendees at the Independence Anniversary include the King of the Netherlands, the Presidents of Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago, the Vice President of China, as well as high-level delegations from the United States, Russia, Brazil, and other partner nations.
Representing Ghana at the arrival and associated events was Mr. Humphrey C. Ajongbah, Minister Plenipotentiary at the Embassy of Ghana in Brazil. Mr. Ajongbah conveyed Ghana’s goodwill and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Suriname.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to Brazil, concurrently accredited to the Republic of Suriname, H.E. Nii Amasah Namoale, was unable to attend the ceremony as he is yet to present his Letters of Credence to the President of the Republic of Suriname, H.E. Jennefer Geerlings-Simons. In accordance with diplomatic protocol, official representation at such high-level national ceremonies requires prior presentation of credentials. Nonetheless, H.E. Namoale continues to engage actively with Surinamese authorities in preparation for his forthcoming accreditation.
The Embassy extends its warm congratulations to the Government and people of Suriname on their historic Golden Jubilee of Independence.
